PDF to PowerPoint with AI: slides, not screenshots

Upload a report, a business plan or a Word document. Slidy reads the text, picks out the key messages and rebuilds them as a designed, editable slide deck — then exports a real .pptx you can open in PowerPoint, Google Slides or Keynote.

Converter or AI rewrite: know which one you need

"PDF to PowerPoint" covers two very different jobs, and choosing the wrong tool wastes an afternoon.

A file converter (Adobe Acrobat, online converters) keeps every page as it is: same layout, same paragraphs, one PDF page becomes one slide. That is what you want for a brochure you only need to tweak.

An AI presentation generator like Slidy does the opposite. It reads the text of your document, decides what matters, and writes a new presentation: a title slide, an agenda, key figures, comparisons, timelines and a conclusion, each with a layout chosen for the content. That is what you want when the document is a dense report and the audience needs a 15-minute talk.

If you are unsure, ask yourself whether you would present the original pages as they are. If the answer is no, you need a rewrite, not a conversion.

How to turn a PDF into a PowerPoint with Slidy

  1. Create a free account with Google or a confirmed email address.
  2. Choose "Import File" and drop a PDF, DOCX or TXT file. Slidy extracts the text.
  3. Choose the length, from 5–10 slides for a short briefing to 30–35 slides for a training session.
  4. Generate. Slidy structures the content, writes slide titles and bullets, and picks one of 9 visual themes based on the topic.
  5. Edit in the browser. Correct wording, check every figure against the source document, and replace images with your own.
  6. Export to PowerPoint. Download the editable .pptx for €2.99 (or use a credit from a 5-export pack), then finish it in PowerPoint, Google Slides or Keynote.

Which documents work best

Slidy works from the text of your file. The cleaner the text, the better the deck:

  • Reports and studies — market studies, annual reviews, audit findings, research summaries.
  • Business plans — the fastest way to a first pitch deck draft.
  • Course notes and training material — turned into a structured lesson with one idea per slide.
  • Proposals and briefs — Word documents that need to become a client presentation.

Supported formats are PDF, DOCX and TXT. The older Word format (.doc) is not supported: save it as DOCX or PDF first. If you only have a few paragraphs, you can also paste the text directly instead of uploading a file.

What is not carried over from your PDF

Being precise about this avoids surprises:

  • Poor-quality scans. PDFs made of page photos or scans are read page by page as images (since 11 October 2026). A blurry or handwritten scan can still come out incomplete: check the result, or paste the text.
  • Images and charts from the document. Only the text is used. Slidy adds its own images; you can replace them with your charts in the editor or in PowerPoint.
  • Your original layout and fonts. The deck uses Slidy's themes, not the design of the PDF.

When Slidy is not the right choice

  • You need a faithful page-by-page conversion of a designed brochure: use a file converter such as Acrobat's export instead.
  • Your PDF is a scan and you cannot get the text: Slidy will not be able to read it.
  • You must keep your corporate template exactly: Slidy applies its own themes, so you would restyle the exported file in PowerPoint.
  • You convert dozens of documents a month as a team: a subscription tool with a shared workspace may suit you better.

For everything else — turning a long document into a presentation people will actually follow — start with the free tier and judge the result before paying. Comparing tools? See our dated comparison with Gamma and others.

A summary, not a copy

A 40-page report does not belong on 40 slides. Slidy condenses the document into the number of slides you choose, with one message per slide.

Editable text everywhere

Titles, bullets and figures are real text in the browser editor and in the exported PowerPoint — not images of your PDF pages.

Same language as your document

A French PDF gives French slides, a Spanish DOCX gives Spanish slides. No translation step to undo.

Frequently asked questions

Can Slidy convert a PDF to PowerPoint for free?+
You can generate and edit the presentation for free (2 AI generations every 30 days, no credit card). Downloading the editable .pptx costs €2.99 per deck, or €9.99 for 5 exports, paid once by card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Which file formats can I upload?+
PDF, DOCX and plain text (.txt). The older .doc format is not supported; save the file as DOCX or PDF first.
Does Slidy work with scanned PDFs?+
Yes, in most cases. If the PDF has no selectable text, Slidy reads the pages as images. Very blurry or handwritten scans may come out incomplete, in which case paste the text instead.
Will my slides keep the layout of the PDF?+
No. Slidy is not a page-by-page converter: it rewrites the content into new slides with its own layouts and themes. The text in the export stays fully editable.
Are the images from my PDF reused?+
No, only the text is used. You can replace the images Slidy suggests with your own in the browser editor or after export.
Can I convert a Word document to PowerPoint?+
Yes. Upload a DOCX file and Slidy turns its text into slides, the same way as for a PDF.
In which language will the slides be?+
In the language of your document. The Slidy interface itself is in English.
